What’s Happening to My Arms?

Menopause, Crepey Skin and Sagging Explained

You might notice it while putting on a sleeveless top or lifting your arm: the skin looks more crinkled, feels less firm or hangs differently than it used to.

It can feel like these changes have appeared suddenly. Around menopause, changes in hormone levels can affect the skin’s thickness, moisture and support, making the upper arms an area where the difference becomes noticeable.

Why does menopause affect skin firmness?

As oestrogen levels decline, skin can become thinner and drier. It also loses collagen, the protein that helps give skin its structure and firmness.

The American Academy of Dermatology reports that women’s skin loses approximately 30% of its collagen during the first five years of menopause. This is a general estimate rather than a prediction for every woman, but it helps explain why changes can feel more pronounced during this stage of life.

With less structural support, skin becomes less firm and sagging can become more visible. “Skin laxity” is simply the term used to describe this looseness.

What causes that crepey appearance?

Crepey skin describes a fine, crinkled texture that resembles crepe paper. During menopause, skin becomes thinner and loses some of its ability to retain water. Dryness can make those small folds and lines more noticeable.

Previous sun exposure also contributes to visible skin ageing, so hormonal changes may arrive alongside the effects of years spent outdoors.

Crepeyness and sagging often appear together, but they need different consideration. One concerns surface texture; the other concerns how firmly the skin is supported. Upper-arm fullness is another concern again. A useful assessment looks at each of these rather than treating every change as the same problem.

What can help?

Daily care is a good starting point. Moisturising after showering helps manage dryness - Slimit Balm is perfect for menopausal skin (yes, it's in our shop), while broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed arms helps protect against further sun damage. These habits support skin health, although moisturiser cannot remove loose skin.

If laxity is your main concern, you may also want to explore a non-surgical skin-tightening treatment.

Options for treating menopause arms include:

  1. HIFU
  2. SkinTIGHT
  3. Ultralipo
  4. LaserSculpt
  5. Slimit

Where does HIFU fit in?

HIFU—high-intensity focused ultrasound—is used in selected treatment protocols for skin tightening and body contouring.

Research on a particular form of focused ultrasound, called microfocused ultrasound with visualisation, has found to provide improvements in upper-arm skin laxity. In a small randomised study, improvements were assessed over several months. This supports ultrasound as an option to discuss, but the findings cannot automatically be applied to every device or protocol.

The right treatment depends on your skin, the amount of laxity and your goals. Non-surgical tightening cannot remove substantial excess skin, and specific results cannot be promised. However, if you want an improvement, then The Rejuv Lab offers many options to treat your menopause arms.

If you are wondering what is happening to your arms, best place to start is with an assessment. We’ll help you understand the changes you’re seeing and whether our treatments are suitable for you.

Why Is My Lower Face Sagging and Crepey?

A softer jawline, more noticeable jowls, lines around the mouth and a crinkled skin texture can become increasingly visible around menopause.

These changes can affect how your lower face looks, even when your skincare routine has stayed the same. Understanding the difference between skin laxity and surface texture helps us choose an approach suited to your concerns.

How menopause affects your skin

As oestrogen levels decline, skin can become thinner, drier and less firm. Collagen—the protein that helps support the skin—also decreases, contributing to sagging and more visible lines.

Reduced moisture retention can make fine, crepey lines look more pronounced. Previous sun exposure adds to these changes, affecting the appearance of the face and neck over time.

Treatment options at The Rejuv Lab

Your consultation considers skin firmness, texture, treatment suitability and the recovery time you can accommodate. We may discuss one treatment or a carefully planned combination.

HIFU — focused ultrasound for skin tightening

HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to deliver heat at selected depths beneath the skin. Ultrasound tightening can encourage collagen production and may provide gradual, modest improvements in firmness.

It may be considered for suitable patients concerned about lower-face laxity and reduced jawline definition. Results depend on the device, treatment settings and your individual skin response.

PlasmaLIFT — targeted fibroblast treatment

PlasmaLIFT is our fibroblast plasma treatment option, which we assess for selected areas of concern around the lower face.

It differs from cold plasma and requires careful suitability assessment, recovery planning and aftercare. Your consultation will explain the proposed treatment areas, expected benefits and risks, including pigment changes and scarring, before you decide whether to proceed.

Cold plasma — a skin rejuvenation option

Cold plasma may be discussed when skin quality and texture are priorities. Research into its cosmetic rejuvenation applications is still developing, and different plasma technologies work differently. It should not be assumed to provide the same lifting effect as HIFU or the same treatment response as fibroblast plasma.

We’ll explain the specific technology used and what it may realistically offer for your concerns.

RF SkinTIGHT — radiofrequency skin tightening

RF SkinTIGHT uses radiofrequency energy to heat tissue beneath the skin’s surface. Non-invasive radiofrequency treatments can support collagen production and gradual improvements in firmness.

It may be an option for suitable patients seeking treatment for mild skin laxity. The recommended number of appointments depends on your assessment and response.

Which treatment is right for you?

There is no single treatment that suits every lower face. Crepey texture, loose skin and changes in facial contour need individual assessment.

At The Rejuv Lab, we’ll discuss your priorities and recommend an appropriate plan, with clear advice about expected improvements, treatment spacing and aftercare. Non-surgical treatments can offer modest tightening, but they cannot reproduce the results of a surgical facelift.

Menopause Belly:

Why Is My Body Shape Changing?

Your waistband feels tighter, your tummy looks fuller, and your body seems to be changing—even when your usual habits have stayed much the same.

Often called “menopause belly”, these changes can involve fat distribution, skin firmness and overall body composition. Understanding what is happening helps you choose the right support.

Why does fat collect around the middle?

During menopause, declining oestrogen levels encourage a shift towards storing fat around the abdomen.

Menopause influences where fat is stored, while ageing is a major driver of midlife weight gain. Changes in muscle mass, activity, sleep and eating habits can also contribute. This means your waistline may change even without a dramatic change on the scales.

Why does my tummy skin look looser or crepey?

Menopause can also affect the skin covering your abdomen. Falling hormone levels are associated with thinner, drier skin and reduced collagen, which can make laxity and fine, crinkled texture more noticeable.

A fuller tummy and loose skin are different concerns. Some people notice one; others experience both. Your treatment assessment should consider each separately.

What can help?

Regular movement, strength training, balanced meals and support for sleep and menopause symptoms form the foundation of managing midlife body changes. A GP or dietitian can help you develop an approach suited to your health and circumstances.

For suitable patients with localised contour or skin-firmness concerns, non-surgical treatments may also be worth exploring.

What can body sculpting realistically achieve?

Non-invasive body contouring aims to improve localised shape or appearance. It does not treat obesity, produce meaningful weight loss or replace the health benefits of weight management. Cosmetic contouring also does not address deeper visceral fat surrounding the organs. Results may be modest, temporary or require maintenance.

Consistency is key to achieving results - and realistic expectations, along with patience are essential.
